Clinical Answers
1. Who benefits from the VeinViewer?
All patients needing vascular access, especially those with difficult-to-find vessels, potentially will benefit from the VeinViewer Imaging System. Additional VeinViewer benefits include:
  • Reduction in clinician "guesswork" while locating a vessel – the VeinViewer illuminates the position of the target area.
  • Avoids patient pain and discomfort that comes from multiple sticks.
  • Removes stress for both the caregiver and the patient.
  • Use on all patients needing vascular access or avoidance regardless of age, body type or skin tone.
  • Is the non-invasive, hands-free solution for problem-free vascular access.
  • From pediatrics to geriatrics, VeinViewer is the answer.

2. What is the regulatory status of the VeinViewer?
The VeinViewer is a UL certified FDA Class I exempt device.

3. Why is the VeinViewer better for the patient than traditional methods of locating vessels for venous access or avoidance?
Healthcare professionals rely heavily upon the senses of sight and touch to locate veins. Ultrasound is another technology used to locate difficult-to-find veins. However, this technology requires specialized training, is expensive and many times too cumbersome to use. Accordingly, some clinicians have attempted to use vascular illumination systems that mimic high-intensity flashlights. This type of illumination system has multiple drawbacks, including limited target site visualization, intense heating of the tissues directly under and around the site, the inability to be used in normal room lighting conditions, and potential cross-contamination of patients. VeinViewer provides the following distinct advantages over traditional methods of locating vessels:
  • Once positioned, the VeinViewer frees clinicians to use their hands.
  • Reduces clinician "guesswork" while locating a vessel – the VeinViewer illuminates the position of the target area.
  • VeinViewer projects the image of the vasculature directly onto the patient's skin, focusing attention on the patient during the procedure rather than on a secondary monitor.
  • VeinViewer does not require any specialized skills or training for use.
  • VeinViewer cannot cause cross-contamination of patients because there is no contact between the patient and the VeinViewer.

4. Does the VeinViewer depict arteries in addition to veins? Can it be used for arterial punctures?
With the VeinViewer technology, it is easy to determine arteries from veins if one or both fall within the viewing depth employed by the technology, from the surface of the skin to approximately 6 to 8 mm deep. Arteries appear pulsatile while veins do not. In many patients, arteries are not visible due to the depth of the artery outside of the viewing window of the technology. If the artery falls within the viewing window of the VeinViewer and is an acceptable access point, it may be used for arterial punctures.
