Technology Answers

1. What is the VeinViewer?
The VeinViewer is the first and only patented technology to locate subcutaneous veins and project real-time images of their location onto the surface of the skin. An adjustable head can be positioned over any part of the patient's anatomy to produce this image, leaving the hand of the clinician free for clinical intervention. The VeinViewer utilizes a near-infrared light source to differentiate red blood cells from surrounding tissues. These infrared light photons are received by a detector located in the video camera; a computer digitizes these photons, produces an image and projects the onto the patient's skin to show the location of the veins. With VeinViewer, medical professionals may quickly and conveniently map a patient's vasculature, regardless of age, size or ethnicity.

2. Does the VeinViewer require any special skills or training to operate?
No, the VeinViewer is easy to use and does not require any special training or skills. Please note: the use of the VeinViewer to locate vasculature does not replace specialized skills required for vascular access.

3. Can the VeinViewer near-infrared light cause harm to tissues?
No, the VeinViewer does not contain light sources with enough intensity to cause body heating or skin damage with prolonged use. The non-ionizing energy emitted from the LED light sources are many magnitudes under previously established safety limits. Data is on file at Luminetx if source material is required by your facility.

4. How does the VeinViewer work?
The VeinViewer is a mobile biomedical device consisting of the following four technologies:

1. Infrared light source - The light source emits a harmless, near-infrared light reflected back to the surface from the tissue surrounding the vein, while no light is reflected back from the blood inside the vessel.
2. Digital video camera - The digital video camera captures the near-infrared light reflected back from the patient.
3. Image processing unit - The microprocessor adds contrast and projects this image back on the skin in their actual location.
4. Digital image projector - Using Texas Instruments Digital Light Processing™ technology, the projector displays these real-time images of the vasculature onto the surface of the skin.
